What
is it?
Reflexology is a non-invasive therapy performed on the feet, using special manipulations with varying degrees of pressure, to provide benefits to the client that are both physical and emotional. It is based on the principle that there are reflex zones in the feet which are linked by energy pathways to corresponding parts of the body and, when pressure is applied, it stimulates the movement of energy along these pathways.
Reflexology is a holistic treatment, as the aim is to treat the whole person, body, mind and spirit, to induce a state of balance and harmony, stimulating the body’s own potential to heal both physically and emotionally.
Background
Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, but it wasn’t until 1913 that Dr William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as “zone therapy”. He noted that reflex areas on the feet were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.
In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed this zone therapy and is now known as Reflexology. She mapped the entire body on the feet an developed reflex points which are linked by energy pathways to corresponding parts of the body.
How it works
Pressure for stimulating movement of energy along the pathways is applied using specific finger and thumb massage techniques.
What happens during a treatment
Firstly, the therapist will take details of both present and past health, also lifestyle.
The client will be sat either in a chair with both feet elevated or on a couch. All footwear will be removed. The therapist will then use their hands to apply pressure movements to the feet.
